Obama Visits With Immigration Activists Fasting on the National Mall

President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama stopped by the National Mall on Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, to speak with immigration reform activists who are fasting as part of an effort to push Congress to act on a path to citizenship for millions of the nation's undocumented immigrants.
"The President and the First Lady are visiting individuals taking part in Fast For Families on the National Mall and offer their support for those who are fasting on behalf of immigration reform," a White House official said, according to a pool report.

Activists have been fasting on the National Mall since Nov. 12 and have attracted several White House and Congressional leaders who have visited to show solidarity. The Obamas spoke with 18 day fasters and two activists who have been fasting for 18 days: Eliseo Medina (left) and Dae Joong Yoon (right), and thanked them for their "sacrifice and dedication."

California Nurse's Union helps Philippine Relief

SAN FRANCISCO – The first team of nurses from the California Nurses Association/National Nurses United, with previous disaster experience, headed to Manila over the weekend, to assist in medical relief operations in the some of the hardest-hit areas in the Philippines in the wake of Typhoon Yolanda. “First and foremost, I’m a nurse and that’s second nature for us to help those in need, those who are sick,” Michelle Gutierrez, a nurse who is part of the delegation.
Another member of the delegation, nurse Joseph Catindig said he was moved to join the mission because, “it was heartbreaking to see the images of people on social media and on television.”
State Assemblyman Rob Bonta, the only Filipino in the California legislature, was among those who sent off the nurses.
Officers from the National Alliance of Filipino Concerns were also there applauding the nurses for taking time off work and volunteering to treat kababayans suffering from injuries and diseases.
“I’m proud and honored to be here with these brave and courageous nurses,” Bonta said.
Zenei Cortez, co-president of the California Nurses Association said, “What we hope is to provide care for the wounded, the sick, provide them with food, water, clothing and shelter. As registered nurses, this is something we do everyday. We provide care.”

Stop the cuts to Food Stamps

This is in response to the excellent film,  A Place at the Table, which we screened on Friday Night. Here is an action you should take.

I’m angry. I bet you are too. Two weeks ago, roughly 47 million people, nearly half of them children, lost part of their food stamp (SNAP) benefits. Apparently the average allocation of $1.40 per person per meal is too generous for the “lazy moochers” that the Right-wing characterizes as anyone who needs a helping hand, even five years into the greatest recession to hit this country since the Great Depression. As if this first round of cuts wasn’t enough, funding for food stamps is yet again on the chopping block this week as Congress attempts to pass a final Farm Bill. The choice seems to be cutting $4 billion or cutting $40 billion. We’re talking about taking food stamps away from 3.8 million people with 1.5 billion lost meals for struggling families, in the first year alone. Take action right now to demand a third option – NO CUTS TO FOOD STAMPS! Check the list of Senators and Representatives on the committee and call the Capitol switchboard to reach their offices: (202) 224-3121. Do you boil over about the contradiction of “family values” politicians taking food from the mouths of babes and calling this a “democratic” economic system that promotes “freedom”? Freedom to starve, apparently!
