Wall Street's greed, recklessness, and illegal behavior drove this country into the worst recession since the Great Depression. For too long, this billionaire class has corrupted our political system. We must act decisively to make our economy fair again.

Wall Street's dangerous manipulation of our economy has helped divert most of all new income to the top one percent, contributing to the most unequal level of wealth and income distribution of any major country on earth.

Today, we live in the richest country in the history of the world, but that reality means little because much of that wealth is controlled by a tiny handful of individuals. The skyrocketing level of income and wealth inequality is not only grotesque and immoral, it is economically unsustainable.

The reality is that for the past 40 years, Wall Street and the billionaire class have rigged the rules to redistribute wealth and income to the wealthiest and most powerful people in this country. As a result, Wall Street exists as an island unto itself, benefiting only the extremely wealthy while using our money to get rich.

That ends when I am president. Let me tell you what I'm going to do, then sign on to endorse my plan to take on Wall Street.

Donald Trump, who first surged to the front of the Republican field on the strength of his hyperbole on immigration, has finally put out specific proposals.

Unsurprisingly for him but unfortunately for the rest of us, Trump’s first policy paper of the campaign is at best impractical, at worst utter nonsense.

Issue papers from presidential candidates are often overoptimistic wish lists, but Trump’s plan is flawed in so many ways, it’s difficult to know where to start.

One big idea is that Mexico will pay for an impenetrable wall along the 2,000-mile border to avoid sanctions. No matter how great a deal-maker Trump may be, that’s ludicrous. And where would Trump get the money to triple the number of Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers? 

Another proposal is to do away with birthright citizenship – if you’re born in the United States, you’re automatically a citizen – for the children of undocumented immigrants. Trump glosses over the fact that it’s in the U.S. Constitution, and that the odds of taking it out are slim and none.

Cutting off the money that undocumented workers send home to Mexico and Central America and increasing fees for legal border crossings would backfire and damage the economies on both sides, according to actual experts. Mexico is the second-largest trading partner of the United States and is California’s biggest export market by far.

Trump gets applause by accusing Mexico of exporting “rapists.” But there are thousands of highly skilled and educated Mexicans who are working here, as Tim Johnson of McClatchy Newspapers reports. These are the bright and ambitious immigrants who have always strengthened America. 

Trump’s plan plays on fear, and carrying it out would inevitably mean mass deportations. Anyone who’s not a diehard supporter has to admit this is not a serious solution to fix our broken immigration system.

Responsible Republicans support comprehensive reform that would strengthen the border, but that also recognizes the reality of the millions of undocumented immigrants who have established lives here. California is leading the way for humane policies. 

Despite his shallow campaign – basically calling others names and bragging about himself – Trump keeps rising in the polls. At some point soon, voters have to treat him as a serious candidate. That means demanding more than just tough talk.

28,000 Greet Bernie in Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. – Shattering a day-old record, 28,000 backers of Bernie Sanders on Sunday filled all the seats and crowded into overflow areas outside the Moda Center sports arena where the NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers play.

“Whoa. This is an unbelievable turnout,” Sanders said after he walked onto the stage. Consistently drawing bigger turnouts than any other presidential contender, Sanders told the packed Portland arena, “You’ve done it better than anyone else.” The arena seats were filled and thousands more listened to the speech on loudspeakers outside, according to Michael Lewellen, a Rose Quarter vice president. The total turnout far surpassed the 15,000 in Seattle just 24 hours earlier.

The big and boisterous crowds, Sanders said, are sending a message that it’s time to reverse the four-decade decline of the American middle class and launch a grassroots “political revolution” to take on the billionaire class. “Bringing people together,” Sanders added, is at the core of his campaign.



Sanders also called for criminal justice reform. “There is no candidate who will fight harder to end institutional racism in this country and to reform our broken criminal justice system,” he said.

In the nearly hour-long speech, Sanders touched on economic and jobs proposals, criminal justice reform and civil rights issues.

15,000 Greet Sanders in Seattle

The cheering for Sen. Bernie Sanders began outside the UW’s Hec Edmundson Pavilion on Saturday night, as Sanders talked to the 3,000 supporters who couldn’t get in, before giving a rip roaring populist speech to the 12,000 supporters inside the basketball arena.

Sanders was blocked from speaking at a Social Security anniversary celebration earlier in the day at Westlake Center, due to a disruption by Black Lives Matter protesters similar to one that greeted him at NetRoots Nation in Phoenix three weeks ago.

The rally filled the arena and left thousands outside. Earlier in the day Sanders participation in a rally at Westlake Park was cut short because protesters took over the microphone. 

If the boorish, disjointed protest had not blocked him, the Westlake crowd would have heard Sanders talk knowledgeably about unemployment among African American youth, raising wages for the working poor, America’s high incarceration rate and the need for prison reform. He held forth later at the UW

“Too many young lives are being destroyed by the so-called ‘War on Drugs’,” the Democratic presidential candidate declared.  “Too many lives are being destroyed by our system of incarceration.” And, pledged Sanders, “No President will fight harder to end the stain of racism and reform our criminal justice system. Period.”

National Nurses Union to Meet With Bernie

NURSES UNION HOSTS BERNIE MONDAY: National Nurses United, the largest nurses' union in the country, will host Sen. Bernie Sanders for brunch at union headquarters in Oakland on Monday. Will they discuss an endorsement? Morning Shift noted last week that NNU plans to issue a presidential endorsement before September, and that NNU Executive Director RoseAnn DeMoro seemed very taken with Bernie. "Let's just be real. Bernie Sanders' issues align with everybody in organized labor from top to bottom," DeMoro said.

The Fight for Voting Rights is Our Fight

Thursday, August 6 marks the 50-year anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. This landmark piece of legislation was a milestone in the fight for civil rights and a great step forward in the advancement of our democracy. This important and popular law passed the House and Senate with the support of large majorities from both parties.

Unfortunately, some people would rather increase the power of the privileged few than defend voting rights. Right-wing groups like the Heritage Foundation and the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) have been promoting legislative proposals which make it harder for minorities to register and vote. Sadly, those proposals have had some success at the state level.

Then there's the Supreme Court. The Court's conservative majority struck a blow against democracy in 2010 with its Citizens United decision. In 2013 it struck another blow, when it overturned a key provision of the Voting Rights Act. That made it very difficult to step in and enforce voters' rights under the Act.
