Did you see the Sacramento Bee's front-page headline yesterday (Friday, May 13)?

"Nonpartisan Voters Face Hurdles In CA Presidential Primary"

The news story in the Sac Bee, "No-party voters still face hurdles" does a half-decent job of explaining the deeper problems.  But, it still buried important information back on page 17A, especially the essential requirement that voters who are registered as "No Party Preference" who go to the poll stations on June 7 will not get a Democratic ballot UNLESS they specifically REQUEST one.  The polling place worker will automatically give a NPP-registered voter a ballot without the Demo presidential candidate names unless the voter takes the initiative to ask the poll worker for it.  That may not seem like a big deal, but that overt step in the process may be widely overlooked and cause many problems...such as uninformed poll workers perhaps refusing to give a Demo ballot upon request or backlogs in replacing ballots when NPP voters go into their booth and find that the ballot does not include the Demo presidential candidates, and then having to ask to replace it.

Making it worse, county elections office staff seem to have different perceptions of how the NPP voter request process will work.  One worker told me that any such ballots will be handled as Provisional ballots and counted days later.  Another told me that's not true.  However, the fact that county elections workers can't agree on what's happening suggests potential for problems.

I fear that these procedural details will result in fewer votes for Senator Sanders.  The Calif. Democratic Party organization does not seem concerned about these NPP voter details because they back Clinton and they know that most NPP voters are going to vote for Sanders.

Take a look at Friday's Sac Bee front-page headline if you haven't already seen it.  And let everyone you know who is knocking on doors and registering voters about the requirement that a NPP-registered voter has to take the initiative to request a Demo presidential ballot if they want to vote for Bernie.

Senator Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign offers as many questions as hope in who will continue to mobilize the millions of voters now open to democratic socialism. This June’s People’s Summit, which brings together many pro-Sanders groups and their allies, may provide one answer to what happens after the Sanders campaign. Socialists would be wise to study the past to develop a strategy to approach post-election efforts to build long-term and structured progressive unity.

Two recent experiences in presidential politics for socialists are the Democratic Agenda around Ted Kennedy and the National Rainbow Coalition around Jesse Jackson. Socialists should understand both in order to inform ourselves how to strategically plan for the post-Bernie political landscape.

Today’s Sanders campaign has similarities and stark differences to both previous insurgencies. Unlike Kennedy and the Democratic Agenda, Sanders is running explicitly as a democratic socialist and his campaign is not driven by any single formal alliance, but largely by the Senator’s reputation, celebrity surrogates, a handful of unions, and millions of small donors and grassroots volunteers. Closer to Jackson’s campaigns, Sanders enjoys the support of several socialist organizations to a varying degree, including Socialist Alternative, Solidarity, Committees of Correspondence for Democracy & Socialism, and my own Democratic Socialists of America (which is a successor to DSOC). While none play as prominent campaign role as DSOC did for Kennedy, many of these groups are significantly expanding because of the Sanders phenomenon.

Donald Trump and the Republican Pantomime of 2016

Now that Ted Cruz and John Kasich have dropped out of the race and Donald Trump is the “presumptive nominee,” it’s likely we’ll see the GOP establishment pretend to be rallying behind Trump while in reality helping him very little.

The same Republican leaders who mined birtherism, xenophobia, and racist dog whistles for political gold, and who failed to stop the Trump clown car when they had the chance, are now gearing up to pantomime a unified party.

Reliable number crunchers have already compiled masses of data showing that Trump is toxic with women voters, Latinos, evangelicals, immigrants, Muslims and other religious minorities (especially Mormons), and young people.

Add this level of voter estrangement to the rancor the Republican establishment has already shown toward Trump, ranging from grudging acceptance to outright opposition, and there emerges an anti-Trump pincer movement with crucial blocs of voters rejecting him from below, while big Republican donors and party insiders rebuff him from above.

Remembering Kent State: May 4, 1970.

It’s been 45 years since draft-deferred Ohio National Guardsmen aimed their M-1 rifles and .45 pistols at unarmed Kent State College students, killing four and wounding nine on May 4, 1970. You have to be well into middle age now to remember that day. My memory is stirred whenever I look at three photos: John Filo’s striking shot of teenager Mary Ann Vecchio on her knees weeping as she bends over student Jeffrey Miller’s body, a photo I took of Jeffrey’s grieving mother for a magazine my son Alex once edited, and a picture of two of the forever crippled in wheelchairs, KSU student Dean Kahler and wounded Marine Vietnam vet Ron Kovic of ‘Born on the Fourth of July” fame.

On the 41st anniversary of the shootings in 2011, the , the state’s largest newspaper, concluded, “There has never been a completely satisfactory explanation for why the Guard fired.” In fact, it went on, “The central unresolved question in the Kent State affair has been why several dozen Ohio Guardsmen pivoted in unison and fired” and for 13 agonizing seconds killed and wounded so many of their peers. The previous year the paper had reported the finding of an audio recording where a Guard office was said to shout, “All right, prepare to fire.” This led to an editorial urging the state to take another look “and give full account of that tragic day.”

“That tragic day” followed Nixon’s announcement that the U.S. had invaded Cambodia and expanded the war, causing antiwar college students throughout the nation to go on strike. It was a time when the President called antiwar students “bums” and Ohio’s Republican Governor James Rhodes, in a tight and ultimately losing race, described students against the war as “worse than brown shirts and the communist element and also night riders and vigilantes. They are the worst type of people that we harbor in America.”
