Sanders: The Democratic Party Has Got to Wake Up !

Sen. Bernie Sanders.
Surprise, surprise. Workers in Britain, many of whom have seen a decline in their standard of living while the very rich in their country have become much richer, have turned their backs on the European Union and a globalized economy that is failing them and their children.

And it’s not just the British who are suffering. That increasingly globalized economy, established and maintained by the world’s economic elite, is failing people everywhere. Incredibly, the wealthiest 62 people on this planet own as much wealth as the bottom half of the world’s population — around 3.6 billion people. The top 1 percent now owns more wealth than the whole of the bottom 99 percent. The very, very rich enjoy unimaginable luxury while billions of people endure abject poverty, unemployment, and inadequate health care, education, housing and drinking water.

Could this rejection of the current form of the global economy happen in the United States? You bet it could.

During my campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination, I’ve visited 46 states. What I saw and heard on too many occasions were painful realities that the political and media establishment fail even to recognize.

In the last 15 years, nearly 60,000 factories in this country have closed, and more than 4.8 million well-paid manufacturing jobs have disappeared. Much of this is related to disastrous trade agreements that encourage corporations to move to low-wage countries.

David Cay Johnston; Trump Probably Committed Tax Fraud

AMY GOODMAN: We’re going to turn now to one of your former colleagues. We’re going to turn to a new exposéin The Daily Beast headlined "New Evidence Donald Trump Didn’t Pay Taxes," the article published as Trump is refusing to release his tax records. Joining us from Rochester, New York City , is the Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter David Cay Johnston. He used to work at The New York Times, now reporting for The Daily Beast and other publications. David, what did you find?

DAVID CAY JOHNSTON: Well, Donald has done a very good job of trying to keep a number of things out of the public record and shut down investigations, but I found two tax appeals he filed from the year 1984, one with the City of New York and one with the state. And in one of these two cases, Donald filed something called a Schedule C. That’s what a freelancer files. He reported zero income and $626,000 of expenses, with no receipts and no documentation. That’s something that could be construed as tax fraud.

During the hearing, which lasted two days, the CPA and lawyer who had done Trump’s tax returns for years was shown the tax return, and he said, "Well, that’s my signature, but I didn’t prepare that tax return." Now, it was a photocopy. And, of course, you can put a name on a document with a photocopy machine. My first big national investigative reporting award was for just such a device used by a corrupt Michigan politician. And The Trump Organization didn’t respond to any of my questions—the Trump campaign—about this. Donald was hit in one case with a 35 percent penalty. And in the other case, the 25 percent penalty was not applied, only because nobody could find the original tax return, which I think suggests that a photocopy is what was mailed in in the first place.

It also shows, in these two cases, that in the year 1984 Donald paid no federal income taxes. And there’s very good reason to think he doesn’t pay them now, because of a provision in federal law that allows large real estate professionals to live without paying income taxes.

Brexit and the New Global Rebellion | Portside

Brexit and the New Global Rebellion | Portside
Great Britain’s citizens haven’t been losing control over their fate to the EU. They’ve been losing it because their own country’s leaders – as well as those of most other Western democracies – are increasingly in thrall to corporate and financial interests.

Bernie Sanders: Here's What We Want !

https://www.washingtonpost.com/posteverything/wp/2016/06/23/bernie-sanders-heres-what-we-want/Washington Post

As we head toward the Democratic National Convention, I often hear the question, “What does Bernie want?” Wrong question. The right question is what the 12 million Americans [1] who voted for a political revolution want.
And the answer is: They want real change in this country, they want it now and they are prepared to take on the political cowardice and powerful special interests which have prevented that change from happening.
They understand that the United States is the richest country in the history of the world, and that new technology and innovation make us wealthier every day. What they don’t understand is why the middle class continues to decline, 47 million [2] of us live in poverty and many Americans are forced to work two or three jobs just to cobble together the income they need to survive.
What do we want? We want an economy that is not based on uncontrollable greed, monopolistic practices and illegal behavior. We want an economy that protects the human needs and dignity of all people — children, the elderly, the sick, working people and the poor. We want an economic and political system that works for all of us, not one in which almost all new wealth and power rests with a handful of billionaire families.

Bad Trade Deal Kills Good Jobs

Don’t Let the TPP Put More People in the Unemployment Line
By allowing big corporations to pit local workers against highly-exploited workers abroad making less than 65 cents an hour, the proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade agreement threatens to offshore jobs and drive down wages. Please join displaced workers and community leaders in calling on Congress to oppose the job-killing TPP at any of these events…

People's Summit: Next Steps in the Bernie Revolution

People’s Summit Starts This Weekend!
By Barbara Joye

Building political power for the left in the U.S. is a long-term project.  It is not achieved by a single election.  DSA made enormous efforts in the campaign to elect Bernie Sanders and we experienced extraordinary growth as an organization.  Elections are important steps- but only steps. DSA will join more than 40 other lead organizations from the grassroots Bernie movement June 17-19 at a “People’sSummit” in Chicago to build alliances and plan for the next steps of working together.

The Summit is structured as an opportunity to network and exchange ideas, then go forward with greater unity to sustain our momentum and build the progressive movement in the period up to and following the presidential election. National staff and dozens of DSA members from around the country have signed up to attend.

Some of the participating organizations are National Nurses United; Progressive Democrats of America; Labor for Bernie; Working Families; Showing Up for Racial Justice; Latinos for Bernie; African Americans for Bernie; Women for Bernie; and the United States Student Association.   DSA, Socialist Alternative and Solidarity are the only explicitly socialist groups listed, and we were the only one invited to join the planning group.
