Richmond California Progressives Run for State Offices

"Corporate Free" Richmond Candidates Moving UP.

Two Progressive Alliance leaders–city councilors Jovanka Beckles and Gayle McLaughlin–are preparing to run as “corporate free” candidates for higher office.

May 23, 2017
Since 2004, members of the Richmond Progressive Alliance (RPA) have won ten out of the sixteen city council and mayoral races they have contested in their majority minority city of 110,000.
Last November, progressives gained an unprecedented “super-majority” of five on Richmond’s seven-member council—despite more than a decade of heavy spending against them by Chevron Corp. and other big business interests. For 12 years, RPA candidates have distinguished themselves from local Democrats by their lonely, Bernie Sanders-like refusal to take corporate contributions.
Now two Progressive Alliance leaders–city councilors Jovanka Beckles and Gayle McLaughlin–are preparing to run as  “corporate free” candidates for higher office. It’s the first time either one has sought a ballot line outside their own blue-collar refinery town.  Both hope to capitalize on the energy and enthusiasm (and campaign donations) of thousands of former Sanders supporters, including those who tried to reform the Democratic Party at its statewide convention in Sacramento May 20-21.
At a lively pre-convention gathering of 500 “Bernicrats” last Friday night, McLaughlin discussed her not-quite-final decision to run for lieutenant governor of California as a progressive independent.  Like Sanders during his 2014 visit to Richmond–when he was still soliciting advice from out-of-state audiences about running for president—the former Richmond mayor asked the crowd for its “input.” (The response when she finished her speech, was loud chanting: “Run, Gayle, Run!”)

A Memorial Day observance: The destruction that is war

A collaborative effort of the DSA Veterans Working Group

Memorial Day began as a consecration of war dead following our Civil War, by recently freed people honoring their comrades who fought and died with the Union Army for their freedom. Its purpose was one of mourning, not celebration; it is only in this generation that it has become — in the mass culture of the United States of America, at least — a festival for commerce and pageantry, far removed from any context or awareness of battlefield casualties. Out of respect for those who died and for those whose lives were forever changed by war, we must not allow this to happen. We don’t need bumper stickers or parades; we need solidarity.

It is not the first time that capitalist society has hijacked the intended meaning of a holiday; we see the same kind of ahistorical interpretation of Mother’s Day, which was itself a product of 19th century anti-war movements. As veterans of America’s adventurism abroad, we reject the notion that Memorial Day should avoid the uncomfortable question of this nation’s longest-running conflict.

Since 2001, the United States has waged ceaseless, objectiveless warfare in the Middle East, Central Asia, North and East Africa, and the islands of Southeast Asia. We’ve been at war in Afghanistan for nearly seventeen years. A generation has been born into this unending conflict, and we will soon have service members who have never known a time when this country was not at war. As of today, we have lost 6,915 service members directly in battle or in support of hostilities abroad, the overwhelming majority of whom were working class. We have lost many more to suicide and the after-effects of military service, at an average rate of 20 veteran suicides each day. We have contributed to the deaths of over a million people worldwide by bombing their homes, destroying their livelihoods, and instigating a near-apocalyptic refugee crisis in the Middle East. We have spent more than $5 trillion at the expense of all else while we’ve allowed our nation’s infrastructure and schools to rot away. With no real tangible objective, the endless campaign to support American Exceptionalism abroad resembles a truck marooned in sand, spinning its wheels and churning, getting nowhere while digging itself into an even deeper hole. There is no turning point on the horizon; continued engagement by armed forces will not improve the situation. It will cause only more death and waste: all of it unaccountable, most of it invisible to all but its victims. And there are always victims; entire communities overseas live in our shadow, wondering if the next plane overhead will be the last.

Trump Admin. begins NAFTA campaign

TRUMP LAUNCHES NAFTA TALKS
Trump's NAFTA Plans Fail to Protect Workers and the Environment

Take Action!

Sign the Petition Demanding Trump Put Workers and the Planet First

Oakland, CA — Now that President Trump has formally issued notice to Congress of his intent to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), the California Trade Justice Coalition is urging his administration to commit to an open, public process, remove job-killing special investor provisions, and include enforceable labor and environmental standards.

Today’s notification from the Trump administration does not offer any concrete plans for NAFTA renegotiation. However, in late March, a leaked outline of his NAFTA plans read like a wishlist from Wall Street  and even revived parts of the defunct Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) like expanded rights for pharmaceutical firms to block generic competition and keep drug prices high and more investor incentives to offshore jobs that working families depend on.

“The promise of NAFTA being a job creator was hollow,” said California Labor Federation Executive Secretary-Treasurer Art Pulaski. “Thousands of California workers watched helplessly as this flawed trade agreement led to the outsourcing of middle-class jobs. While renegotiating NAFTA is a start, the Trump Administration must fulfill its promise to working people to create an agreement that prioritizes good jobs over corporate greed. We’ll be watching closely to ensure that the voices of working people are heard throughout this process.”

Trump Fires Comey

BREAKING: Donald Trump just fired FBI Director James Comey, compromising the only semi-credible and somewhat-resourced investigation into Trump and his administration's ties to Russia.1 Trump fired Comey on the advice of Jeff Sessions, who was forced to recuse himself from Russia-focused investigations because he lied under oath about his own conversations with Russian officials.2
We now face a constitutional crisis. The security and integrity of our democracy is at stake.
More than ever, what we need now is a truly bipartisan and independent commission to investigate Donald Trump and his administration's foreign entanglements, business conflicts of interest, and violations of federal ethics laws. Will you join me in demanding an immediate, independent investigation into the Trump administration? Click here to sign the petition, which says:
Create a bipartisan, independent commission to investigate Donald Trump and his administration's foreign entanglements, business conflicts of interest, and violations of federal ethics laws.
Comey's record at the FBI isn't flawless—plenty of people take issue with the way he handled investigating Hillary Clinton's emails in the days before the election, and the news reports today about him mischaracterizing backing up emails as forwarding them don't help. But the argument that Trump would fire Comey for being overly critical of Clinton, when Trump personally led chants of "lock her up," is absurd. This isn't about good governance. It's about BAD government and the kind of cronyist cabal that fires someone who a week ago testified that he was made nauseous by the thought of helping Trump win office.

Republicans Take Health Care from Millions of the Poor

Lauren McCauley
May 4, 2017
Common Dreams

By rushing this bill through Congress, Republicans are creating a manufactured crisis that will devastate millions of families. GOP Trumpcare plan is a disaster. It would take away health care from millions of people, cost thousands more for middle-class and low-income Americans, and strip protections from people with pre-existing conditions, all to give a massive tax break to insurance company CEOs and the wealthiest Americans.

Hopefully, now, people will decide to vote in elections.
