Call for Massive Rally Against Racism

I'm Reverend William J. Barber, II, of Repairers of the Breach, the Poor People's Campaign, and the Moral Mondays movement. And I am asking you to join me in this call to all the presidential candidates:

All presidential candidates should unite for a massive, pro-voter, anti-racism rally in Greenville, NC—the city in which Trump supporters spread a bigoted, racist and xenophobic chant—to reject racism and regression, register voters, and demonstrate what an America committed to moving forward together looks like.

On July 17, the Trump 2020 campaign held a rally in Greenville, North Carolina, where President Trump used racist tropes to demonize Representative Ilhan Omar before pausing to let the crowd chant, "Send her back!" Along with the vast majority of Americans, all the other presidential candidates condemned Trump's appeals to racism. We are writing to invite them to come together for a mass rally in Greenville to demonstrate what an alternative for America's future looks like.

While the candidates are not enemies, we understand they are competitors. They have real policy differences between them, and they are on the campaign trail to make the case for why they should be the next person to lead the United States of America. But just as the global community of nation-states has at times put aside competitive differences in order to face an existential threat, we believe this is a time for candidates to unite and demonstrate what an America committed to moving forward together looks like.

Taxing Remittances? How About Taxing the Rich When They Send Their Money Abroad? The Trump hath tweeted, and proclaimed that he wants to subject Guatemalan imports to tariffs, and to subject the remittances that Guatemalan immigrants in the United States send back to their families in Guatemala to a tax. 

What, you may ask, has the little Central American nation done to deserve such treatment? Simple: Its Supreme Court has struck down the nation’s president’s agreeing to Trump’s insistence that the it must stop all Honduran and El Salvadoran refugees passing through Guatemala en route to the United States and compel them either to stay in Guatemala or to return from whence they came.

In other words, Trump is giving Guatemala a choice between death by shooting or death by hanging. The small and impoverished nation clearly has no capacity to house, employ, and provide services to hundreds of thousands of asylum seekers. Nor can it weather the imposition of tariffs on its exports to the U.S., which comprise 40 percent of all its exports. And it would fairly reel from a tax on remittances, which amount to 13 percent of the nation’s GDP. 

But if the Guatemalan high court doesn’t think the president there has the authority to accede to Trump’s demands, what would American courts say about Trump’s authority to punish Guatemala because he’s mightily pissed at it. POTUS can surely slap tariffs on a nation without congressional approval, but I have no idea whether he can slap a tax on individuals sending a portion of their wages across borders to their families.

In 1968 — just a week after Martin Luther King, Jr.’s assassination — Congress passed the Fair Housing Act, or FHA. 

The law secured everyone’s right to housing regardless of race, national origin, disability, familial status, sex, or religion. The FHA protects people from discrimination when they’re renting, getting a mortgage, or seeking housing assistance — including applying for public housing or housing vouchers. 

Now the Trump administration is going against that legacy, proposing a regulation that will target immigrant families living in government-subsidized housing. 

They want to require every single family member in federally assisted housing to have their immigration status screened by the Department of Homeland Security. If just one resident is undocumented, the new policy will effectively block the entire household from receiving any housing benefits — even for legally documented residents and citizens. 

Undocumented people are already ineligible to apply for government benefits. Instead, the rule directly targets “mixed-status” families. In mixed-status families — who all contain members who are legally eligible for public benefits — subsidies are only provided to those eligible members. The family pays the prorated market rent for all non-eligible family members in the household.

The news media and the pundits are awash this morning with comments about Trump’s attacks on 4 Freshwoman Congress persons.

That it not the important point. That is a Trump  misdirection.

The important point is separating families and putting children in cages.

A group of nearly two dozen prominent journalists, academics, and activists Tuesday called on Americans across the nation to use "any nonviolent means necessary" to force the closure of President Donald Trump's immigrant detention facilities.

"We are calling on all people of conscience to shut down the concentration camps on the U.S.-Mexico border," reads the call to action, which was backedby renowned linguist and dissident Noam Chomsky, environmentalist and author Naomi Klein, Interceptco-founder Jeremy Scahill, and others.

"From abolitionism to Standing Rock, Americans have come together time and again to defy horrific injustice," the call states. "Now, as the government tries to normalize concentration camps, it is time like never before to target those responsible. Inspired by the civil rights movement, ACT-UP, and early labor struggles, we must employ every nonviolent tactic at our disposal to oppose this institutionalized criminality."

The call to action marked the beginning of a new campaign titled "No More Concentration Camps," which aims to mobilize communities across the U.S. to combat the Trump administration's horrific—and often deadly—treatment of migrants.

The new campaign is centered around five demands:
Closure of all of Trump's concentration camps now;
Abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE);
Defunding the Customs and Border Protection (CBP);
Upholding the legal right to seek asylum; and
Decriminalization of the border.
